EDGE: 13 artists using common materials in uncommon ways
Arts Benicia is proud the present the work of 13 Bay Are
artists from the Edge Art Group, whose work is
characterized by an imaginative use of materials and
innovative techniques. These artists share an interest
in the unexpected: often their work evokes connections
with familiar objects or methods of fabrication,
surprising the viewer with a visual pun, or the fact
that it is actually made from something other than what
it seems. They are exploring the edges of art, craft,
and the fabrication of everyday or domestic objects.
Benicia artist Marty Jonas joined the Edge group in 2
years ago, and felt that an exhibit of their work would
be a good match for Arts Benicia. Jonas, an artist who
works primarily in fiber media, has shown at all of Arts
Benicia’s member exhibits for many years, as well as
being an active Arts Benicia volunteer.
The other 12 artists are primarily from Alameda, Sonoma,
and Marin Counties, although 3 have relocated to
Arizona, New Mexico, and Florida. They are Ventana Amico,
Allegra Burke, Jeanette Carr, Cynthia Jensen, Shoko
Kageyama-Klyce, Giselle Kappus, Melody Oxarart, Thomas
Pratt, Ruth Tabancay, Cecelia Thorner, Stuart Wagner,
and Nancy Zeigler-Nodelman. All of these accomplished
mixed-media artists are in mid-career, and have shown
their work nationally and internationally: much of their
work has been published in books and periodicals and is
included in many private, museum, and corporate
collections.
EDGE opens March 22 and will be on view through April
20th. The reception, generously sponsored by James H.
Riley, CFP, is Sunday, March 30th at 3 PM. All are
invited.
Arts Benicia Center Gallery is located at 991 Tyler
Street, Suite 114 in Benicia’s Arsenal district. Gallery
hours are Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5 PM, or
by arrangement. Admission is free.
